40 years since ABBA won with Waterloo

40 years since ABBA won with Waterloo

40 years since ABBA won with Waterloo
ABBA onstage in Brighton in 1974
Brighton, United Kingdom - It was 40 years ago today, on the 6th April, 1974 that the Swedish group ABBA won the Grand Prix of the Eurovision Song Contest with their memorable song Waterloo. ABBA went onto become one of the biggest selling groups in the world, selling millions and millions of records, and Waterloo topped the list of songs in the Congratulations show that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the contest in 2005.
Although Luxembourg had won the 1973 edition of Europe's Favourite Tv show, the Luxembourg broadcaster CLT, declined to host the contest for a second successive year, and once again the British broadcaster, the BBC took the opportunity to once again stage the event, this time in Brighton on the south coast of England.

The Way Old Friends Do

The contest was presented, for the fourth time, by Katie Boyle, who had previously taken the role in 1960, 1963 and 1968.

Arrival

Eighteen countries registered to take part in the 19th edition of the contest, including for the very first time, Greece, who sent one of their biggest starts, Marinella.

I Wonder (Departure)

However in the week of the contest, the French President, Georges Pompidou died on the 2nd of April, and as a mark of respect the French withdrew from the contest; their entry was due to be sung by Dani and called La Vie A Vingt-cinq Ans.

Thank You For The Music

The seventeen entries performed in the following order.
  1. Finland - Keep Me Warm sung by Carita
  2. United Kingdom - Long Live Love sung by Olivia Newton John
  3. Spain - Canta Y Se Feliz sung by Peret
  4. Norway - The First Day Of Love sung by Anne-Karine Strøm and the Bendik Singers
  5. Greece - Krassi, Thalassa Ke T'Agori Mou sung by Marinella
  6. Israel - Natati La Khaiai sung by Poogy
  7. Yugoslavia - Moja Generacija 42 sung by Korni
  8. Sweden - Waterloo sung by ABBA
  9. Luxembourg - Bye, Bye I Love You sung by Ireen Sheer
  10. Monaco - Celui Qui Reste Et Celui Qui S'en Va sung by Romuald
  11. Belgium - Fleur De Liberté sung by Jacques Hustin
  12. Netherlands - I See A Star sung by Mouth and MacNeal
  13. Ireland - Cross Your Heart sung by Tina
  14. Germany - Die Sommermelodie sung by Cindy and Bert
  15. Switzerland - Mein Ruf Nach Dir sung by Piera Martell
  16. Portugal - E Depois Do Adeus sung by Paulo de Carvalho
  17. Italy - Si sung by Gigliola Cinquetti

Knowing Me, Knowing You

Norway's entrant Anne-Karine Ström had been part of the Bendik Singers in the 1973. Romuald had represented Monaco in 1964, and Luxembourg in 1969, whilst Gigliola Cinquetti had won the contest for Italy in the 1964 contest.

The Winner Takes It All

There was a return to the voting system that had been last used in the 1970 contest. 10 jury members in every country each awarded one point to their favourite song. For the first time, a draw of lots was used to decide the order in which countries would give the results of their juries. However, it was the last time this method was used to cast the votes. You can see a full breakdown of the voting in our 1974 history page.
Sweden's ABBA led from the very first round of voting and never lost the lead, although briefly threatened by both Italy and Belgium in the early rounds of voting.

Money, Money, Money

Waterloo topped the charts all over Europe and the world.
Their success did not stop there by any means. They continued to top the charts with singles including Mamma Mia, S.O.S, Dancing Queen, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, One Of Us, Gimme Gimme Gimme and many many many more. Their albums also charted high and went gold and platinum in a number of countries.
In 1983 the group split up after more than a decade of phenomenal success but their careers continued. Agnetha and Frida continued to perform and released music although Agnetha did shy away from the spotlight for a long whilst after ABBA split up but has recently released new material. Benny & Björn continued their careers as writers and have worked closely together on new music, have performed in bands and precided over musicals including the world famous and very successful Mamma Mia, which also became a box-off superhit when it was turned into a film.
ABBA's revival still continues and their songs are iconic. One of the Eurovision Song Contest's biggest treasures. Congratulations to ABBA on the 40th anniversary of their victory.

Sweden: Sanna Nielsen wins Melodifestivalen!

Sweden: Sanna Nielsen wins Melodifestivalen!

Sweden: Sanna Nielsen wins Melodifestivalen!
Sanna Nielsen will represent Sweden in Copenhagen.
Stockholm, Sweden - It's been an outstanding Melodifestivalen tour around Sweden arriving to the capital, Stockholm, tonight for the final of the Swedish national selection of the Eurovision Song Contest. Ten acts gave their all to win the votes of the international juries and the people of Sweden, but the one that manage to get the highest number of points, and go to Copenhagen, is Sanna Nielsen with the song Undo.
After four semi-finals, a second chance round and tonight's final, Melodifestivalen 2014 is over. For the past 6 weeks 32 acts have been fighting for the honour of representing Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest.

But it was all down to the votes of the 11 international jury groups, which accounted for 50% of the total result, and the telephone votes of the Swedish audience, accounting for the remaining 50%. In the end they decided that Sanna Nielsen will represent Sweden in Copenhagen with the song Undo.

The finalists

This is the order of appearance in which the artists participated tonight:
  1. Anton Ewald - Natural (John Lundvik)
  2. Ellen Benediktson - Songbird (Sharon Vaughn, Johan Fransson, Tim Larsson, Tobias Lundgren)
  3. Alcazar - Blame It On The Disco (Fredrik Kempe, David Kreuger, Hamed "K-One” Pirouzpanah)
  4. Oscar Zia - Yes We Can (Fredrik Kempe, David Kreuger, Hamed "K-One” Pirouzpanah)
  5. Linus Svenning - Bröder (Fredrik Kempe)
  6. Helena Paparizou - Survivor (Bobby Ljunggren, Henrik Wikström, Karl-Ola Kjellholm, Sharon Vaughn)
  7. YOHIO - To The End (Andreas Johnson, Johan Lyander, Peter Kvint, YOHIO)

  9. Panetoz - Efter Solsken (Johan Hirvi, Mats Lie Skåre, Nebeyu Baheru, Njol Badjie, Pa Modou Badjie)
  10. Ace Wilder - Busy Doin' Nothing (Ace Wilder, Joy Deb, Linnéa Deb)
The Swedish broadcaster SVT offered yet another top entertainment show which, besides the contestants, offered other guest performances from Swedish Eurovision Song Contest singers, like that the 1999 Eurovision winner Charlotte (Nilsson) Perrelli and an interval act dedicated to another Eurovision winner from Sweden: Waterloo by ABBA that won the contest 40 years ago.
After the international juries gave their points the top 3 looked like this:
  1. Ace Wilder - Busy Doin' Nothing 97 points
  2. Sanna Nielsen - Undo 90 points
  3. Alcazar - Blame It On The Disco 62 points
Then the Swedish public gave their results
  1. Sanna Nielsen - Undo 122 points (Total 212 points)
  2. Ace Wilder - Busy Doin' Nothing 113 points (Total 210 points)
  3. Alcazar - Blame It On The Disco 48 points (Total 110 points)
Which means Sanna Nielsen is the winner by just 2 points.
The winner of Melodifestivalen 2014 Sanna Nielsen will go on to represent Sweden at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, Denmark, in the first Semi-Final on the 6th of May with Undo.

Sweden's Alice Babs passes away aged 90

Sweden's Alice Babs passes away aged 90

Sweden's Alice Babs passes away aged 90
Alice Babs in her hayday.
Stockholm, Sweden - Sweden's first ever Eurovision Song Contest entrant, Alice Babs, sadly passed away in Stockholm yesterday at the grand old age of 90 years old. One of the country's most celebrated artists, she will be sadly missed.
In 1958 Sweden debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest, which that year was held in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Ahead of the competition, Alice Babs was chosen to represent her country with the song Lilla stjärna, finishing in a very respectable 4th place.
On Tuesday Alice sadly passed away as a result of Alzheimers Disease. Her lawyer said, "she died peacefully, surrounded by her family".
Her daughter, Titti Sjöblom said, "we cherished the last few months we got to spend with our dear mother. She was comfortable and in peace when she died".

Early Life and career

Born Hildur Alice Nilsson on 26th January 1924 in Västervik, Sweden, Alice grew up in a very musical household. Her father was a cinema pianist and her mother often sung for her and her siblings when she was a child.
She had an immense passion for jazz music and recalls hearing Duke Ellington's Orchestra on a trip to Sweden in 1939.
In 1940 Alice had her breakthrough, appearing in the film Swing it, magistern, subsequently becoming a symbol of jazz music in her native Sweden.
In total Alice Babs appeared in more than 20 films. As mentioned above, she was Sweden's first entry at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958 with a song that has become an evergreen in the Swedish cultural sphere.
After returning from Hilversum with a respectable 4th place under her hat, Alice went on to form a partnership with Svend Asmussen and Ulrik Neuman called Swe-Danes, which became a huge success and even toured the USA. In fact, Alice even appeared on the legendary Ed Sullivan show.

Later career

Later in life, Alice had a varied and fruitful career, including working with Duke Ellington, whose orchestra she had listened to when she was a teenager.
She also had a go at presenting and in 1972 became the first non-opera singer to be named the Royal Court Singer. Subsequently, she went on to become a member of the Royal Academy of Music.
From 1943 until his death, Alice Babs was married to Nils Ivar Sjöblom. The pair had three children together. Their daughter Titti Sjöblom is a well-known singer in her own right and among other things took part in the Swedish national selection, Melodifestivalen, in 1974 with the song Fröken Ur-sång.
Our condolences go to Alice Bab's family.
