Did You Know?

  • Preview videos of the entries first appeared in time for the 1971 edition of Europe's Favourite TV Show. Prior to this it was rare for viewers to see any entries outside their own country.
  • Strict rules were enforced regarding the previews. For many years all participating countries were obliged to screen the previews on their national television channels. They weren't allowed to broadcast them in one programme, and had to be shown in at least two separate programmes.
  • There were also restrictions on the earliest and latest dates they could be broadcast. In that first year of previews in 1971, the previews of Ireland and Malta were only shown in black and white, as colour television wasn't established in those countries yet. In fact the very first colour broadcast in Ireland was the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest, which was staged in Dublin.
  • Nowadays broadcasters aren't obliged to broadcast the preview videos on their networks, but with the changing technology, fans have various ways of watching the preview videos, including watching them all here on Eurovision.tv!

Recalling the Copenhagen contest of 50 years ago

Recalling the Copenhagen contest of 50 years ago

Recalling the Copenhagen contest of 50 years ago
Gigliola Cinquetti: Winner of the 1964 contest
Copenhagen, Denmark - Many visitors to this site will recall the last time Copenhagen staged the Eurovision Song Contest in 2001 in the huge Parken Stadium. However fewer will recall the first time that Denmark hosted the contest, way back on the 21st of March, 1964. Today we call the 50th anniversary of that contest.

Background

As winners of the 1963 event, with the song Dansevise sung by Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann, Danish broadcaster DR had the task of organising the 1964 contest.
They chose the Concert Hall in the Tivoli Gardens in the centre of Copenhagen as the venue, which could seat an audience of around 1600.
There were some changes to the line-up. from the previous year, Portugal made their debut, though Sweden were obliged to withdraw, due to a strike by their Musicians Union. This left the the total number of entrants at 16. The total audience was expected to be around 100 million viewers.
Rehearsals commenced on Wednesday the 18th of March, with the artists being accompanied by the 42 piece Grand Prix Orchestra, with Kai Mortensen as the Musical Director.
The programme was presented by Lotte Wæver, and was around 96 minutes in duration.

The Participants

  1. Luxembourg: Dès Que Le Printemps Revient sung by Hugues Aufray
  2. Netherlands:Jij Bent Mijn Leven sung by Anneke Grönloh
  3. Norway: Spiral sung by Arne Bendiksen
  4. Denmark: Sangen Om Dig sung by Bjørn Tidmand
  5. Finland: Laiskotellen sung by Lasse Mårtenson
  6. Austria: Warum, Nur, Warum sung by Udo Jürgens
  7. France: Le Chant De Mallory sung by Rachel
  8. United Kingdom: I Love The Little Things sung by Matt Monro
  9. Germany: Man Gewöhnt Sich So Schnell An Das Schöne sung by Nora Nova
  10. Monaco: Où Sont-elles Passées? sung by Romuald
  11. Portugal: Oração sung by António Calvário
  12. Italy: Non Ho L'étà sung by Gigliola Cinquetti
  13. Yugoslavia: Zivot, Je Sklopio Krug sung by Sabahudin Kurt
  14. Switzerland: I Miei Pensieri sung by Anita Traversi
  15. Belgium: Près De Ma Rivière sung by Robert Cogoi
  16. Spain: Caracola sung by Nelly, Tim and Tony
For two of the artists, this was the first of their three appearances in the contest. Udo Jürgens for Austria would represent his country again in 1965, and most notably in 1966 when he won the contest with the song Merci Chérie. Romuald would return to represent Luxembourg in 1969, and in 1974 he once again represented Monaco, where he gained a respectable fourth place with Celui Qui Reste Et Celui Qui S'en Va.

Stage Protest

Following the performance by the Swiss entrant, a protestor rushed on stage holding a banner that said 'Boycott Franco and Salazar' (the dictators who were in power in Spain and Portugal). He was quickly removed, as cameras cut to a shot of the scoreboard.

The Voting

For the third year in a row a new voting system was introduced, this one would last slightly longer than the previous systems and remained in force until 1966.
Each country had 10 jury members who distributed three points among their one, two, or three favourite songs. The points were added and the first, second, and third placed songs were awarded 5, 3, and 1 votes in order. [If only one song got every point within the jury it would get all 9 points. If only two songs were chosen, the songs would get 6 and 3 points in order].
You can see the breakdown of the voting in the History page for 1964 on our site. The countries voted in that of performance order.
It was somewhat of a runaway victory for Italy, taking the lead in the very first round and never looked in doubt, gaining almost three times the number of votes as the runner up from the United Kingdom.

About the winner

Gigliola Cinquetti was born on the 20th December, 1947 in Verona. Aged just sixteen, she won the San Remo Festival in 1964 with Non Ho L'età which provided her the opportunity to present the song to a wider audience in Europe's Favourite TV show. The song went onto become a big international hit.
She went onto win the San Remo Festival again in 1966 with Dio Come Ti Amo, although this time it was the composer Domenico Modugno who took the song onto the Eurovision Song Contest, with a less successful outcome, when he finished in joint last place.
Gigliola Cinquetti returned to the contest in 1974, when she finished second with the song Si, which also went onto become a big international hit. Her last association to date with the contest was in 1991 when she co-presented the contest, along with Toto Cutugno, when it was staged in Rome.
She became a professional journalist, and works in presenting current affair programmes.

Did you know?

  • The winning song reached the top 20 in the charts of Italy, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Norway.

Official #JoinUs song launched, penned by Emmelie
Emmelie brought the victory to Denmark in 2013.

Copenhagen, Denmark - The official #JoinUs song that will be performed in the Final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, has been released.
Emmelie de Forest, the ruling champion of the Eurovision Song Contest, is the artist behind the song Rainmaker.
"It is about a tribe joining together to call upon the rainmaker to make their land blossom again. But on a more general level the rainmaker can be anything or anyone – it is about coming together and helping each other out," Emmelie explains.
You can get the song already now!
The song will be performed during the Final on the 10th of May in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Living her dream

But she’s not only been busy with this, but has been enjoying success after her victory last year.
"I’ve been performing my music around Europe, released my debut album and written a lot of new songs – to be honest, I’m living my dream!" Emmelie adds.
Her winning song Only Teardrops won the hearts of Europe last May and went on to become a number one hit in 12 countries in Europe. During the last year, Emmelie has been performing all over Europe, amongst others in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Malta, Albania, Belarus and Ukraine.
Her victory in Malmö brought the Danish broadcaster, DR, the right to host the contest in Denmark. A challenge they took up and thus the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest will take place on the 6th, 8th and 10th of May in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen, Denmark - After half a year of preparations, DR’s production team will, in March, move into the historical shipyard on Refshaleøen in Copenhagen where the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest is set to take place in May.
The halls have been cleared of the last containers. The mighty pillars that connect the two halls will soon be gone. The gigantic ceiling has been strengthened and the gates will soon be removed and replaced by new doors.
After half a year of thorough preparation, the old B&W shipyard on Refshaleøen is almost ready for DR to move in and rig up for the Eurovision Song Contest in May.
”A lot will be happening during the next month, but the big milestone is, of course, when the first section of DR’s production team physically moves into the B&W-Hallerne in March, and then it will be full speed ahead”, explains the Head of Relations for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, Søren Therkelsen, who in responsible for the partnership between DR and the City of Copenhagen.

Gradually coming together

It is the project company ”Host City Copenhagen”, made up of the City of Copenhagen, the Capital City Region, Wonderful Copenhagen and Refshaleøen's Property Company that are responsible for getting the impressive B&W-Hallerne ready, whilst DR is reponsible for producing the TV shows.
”We have been wokring on the Eurovision 2014 project for over half a year and that means that we are now seriously moving from the planning phase to the implementation phase, where everything is becoming more concrete”, says Søren Therkelsen.

Space for 10,000 spectators and 2,000 press

Inside the halls, grandstands will now be constructed for the 10,000 members of the audience who will see the three TV shows and six dress rehearsals. The modules, which make up the stage will be constructed and sound and light rigging will be installed.
Outside on Refshaleøen, a huge production area will be erected with broadcasting trucks, tents and portable cabins for the production. Dressing and make up rooms will be built, along with a canteen and accreditiaton centre as well as the press centre with space for 1,500-2,000 reporters from all over the world.
”In the coming months, the actual room, lighting, stage and audience stands, green room and a lot more will come into place, and you will be able to see it all unfold”, says the head of relations.
The 2014 Eurovision Song Contest will take place on the 6th, 8th and 10th of May.

An analysis of the Danish acts

An analysis of the Danish acts

An analysis of the Danish acts
Bryan Rice has participated in DMGP several times before.
Copenhagen, Denmark - After Emmelie de Forest’s victory last year and the Eurovision Song Contest being hosted on home turf, DR has managed to attract a number of established names to take part in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2014. This is an analysis by DR of the ten acts vying to represent Denmark.

The line-up

Bryan Rice and Danni Elmo are making comebacks and the female contingent is represented by a number of exciting artists including Anna David and Nadia Malm from the DJ-duo Svenstrup and Vendelboe. For the third year in a row, a previous X Factor contestant is also taking part: A several years of futile attempts, this year DR has managed to persuade Basim to take part in the Danish national selection. Basim could end up in quite a special position. He is risking victory and failure at the same time. As an artist, Basim is taking part with the song Cliché Love Song which he partially wrote himself. However, if Emilie Moldow wins with the song Vi Finder Hjem, he will still be part of the winning team as he also contributed to writing this entry.
Emilie Moldow was incidentally a participant in the children’s MGP in 2001 and bears a number of similarities to Alicia Keys.
Sonny, who is bet known as a dancer is also part of this year’s line-up. Together with his sister, Gigi, he previously tried to make it as a singer, but didn’t have the greatest success. If he is going to manage it this year, his vocals will need to be at least as good as his dance moves.
In addition, this years line-up also boats a number of lesser known names such as Michael Rune feat. Natascha Bessez, Rebekka Thornbech and GlamboyP. The latter is most known for being a member of the boy band Fu:el, who won the talent show Popstars back in 2003. The group’s debut album only sold 5000 copies, however, and Fu:el was quickly forgotten.

So who is going win?

Without having heard any of this year’s songs, it is of course difficult to predict who has the biggest chances of winning in Odense.
In 2010, Bryan rice came second in a very strong line-up, and he definitely has to counted amount the favourites this year with the song I Choose U. Anna David will no doubt also be one of this years favourites, as well as Nadia Malm. Together with Svenstrup and Vendelboe, she has already shown that she is an extremely talented artist with a very beautiful voice.
Even though Basim only came fourth in X Factor back in 2008, he has managed to make music into his living. But it isn’t necessary the participants with the biggest fame factor that can win Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. Emmelie de Forest is a prime example of this.
